Fred Graham ONZM awarded New Year’s Royal Honour 2018

Congratulations to exceptional Tainui sculptor, Fred Graham, who was named as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit on the New Years Honours List 2018, for his services to Maori Art.  Fred will be 90 later this year, and is still making art in his studio at his home in Waiuku, where he lives with his wife Norma.   Fred’s soaring steel bird sculptures can be seen in public spaces such as on the hill behind the Auckland Museum, in Queen Street, and in Mission  Bay.  His work is held in major art galleries in NZ and international collections.

Fred has been a member of Toi Iho since its inception in 2002 and has been a member of Haerewa, the Maori consultants to the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, since Haerewa was established in 1995.  He has a background in education and the arts, as an art teacher, and rugby, as a member of the prestigious Maori All Blacks.  Fred was awarded the Te Tohu Aroha Mo Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, the supreme award from Te Waka Toi in 2017.
