Professor Elizabeth Rankin from the Art History Department at The University of Auckland wrote about the works in the catalogue:
“Historically sculpture served its patrons in religious, political or commemorative roles. When it freed itself of this dependence to explore more adventurous possibilities in the twentieth century, it also forfeited its obvious public purpose. Yet, because of its usually costly materials and complex production, sculpture remains dependent on commissions to produce large-scale works suitable for outdoor sites. It was the recognition that such commissions were few and far between that prompted a group of Auckland-based sculptors to take matters into their own hands. They soon realised that to function and fund-raise successfully they needed official status, and so in 1999 the Outdoor Sculpture 2001 Society Incorporated was born. The goal was not only to initiate artist-led sculptural ventures, but to promote an understanding of sculpture and educate the public and potential patrons about its value in transforming mere spaces into memorable places.”
