He Wai Mou! He Wai Mau! – exhibition by Natalie Robertson at Mangere Arts Centre opens 7 July 2017

The latest exhibition by Ngati Porou photographer and AUT lecturer Natalie Robertson opened yesterday to a crowd gathered on a wet Saturday morning at the Mangere Art Centre. Entitled He Wai Mou! He Wai Mau! the exhibition explores ongoing themes in her work focused on the environment and in particular the importance of water.

This new suite of works begins with a large darkened room where two moving images are projected in large scale on two walls. Taken with drones, this footage shows the beauty of her Waiapu River from a perspective we often are not privilege to – from the air. This sets the scene for the suite of photographs in the next room which focus on Rangitukia Beach, the driftwood and stormy seas that we know and love. She links in with waterways here in Tamaki Makaurau, mirrored so fittingly yesterday with the karanga which opened the show. Ka mau te wehi.
