Here Lisa presents a panoramic video interpretation of the French scenic wallpaper Les Sauvages De La Mer Pacifique (1804). This was of course the time of Cook and other voyagers from Europe who were fascinated by the cultures they encountered in the Pacific, and the art scene in Europe responded to the treasures they brought home and the ideas with works such as Les Sauvages. This was made by the Neoclassical French artist Joseph Dufour.
Lisa responds to the 1804 panels using twenty-first century digital technologies with people drawn from across New Zealand and the Pacific. The 8 minute work has taken several years to produce and comes to the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki after being exhibited several times before in historic homes, art galleries and museums. Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki is of course New Zealand’s premier art gallery.
