Tuku Iho exhibition – Jahnke, Larkin, Taepa and Whiting

Tuku Iho (9 July -1 August 2015) is a new exhibition with work by Robert Janhke, Peata Larkin, Kereama Taepa, Gary Whiting.

The title of the show translates as ‘handed down’ and celebrates the diverse ways in which Maori artists are using new media to articulate older designs particularly from tukutuku.

Jahnke’s new work uses neon and pattern inspired by two significant neon artists, Ivan Navarro (Chile) and Paolo Scirpa (Italy). He references here the concept of emerging into the light from the darkness of Te Po.

On the other hand, Kereama Taepa (Te Arawa, Te Ati Awa) was inspired by the Mona Lisa as well as tukutuku designs. Taepa uses digital media, this time computer image pixillation.

Peata Larkin (Tuhourangi and Tuwharetoa) also references tukutuku in her light boxes which draw on her earlier painted works.

For Gary Whiting (Te Whanau a Apanui) tukutuku is also an inspiration, motivating him to play with bilateral reflections made from toetoe using video technology.

The exhibition opens on Wednesday 9 July at Bath Street Gallery, Parnell. The opening is at 5.30.Bob Jahnke, Tuku, 2015
