John Broughton has written numerous plays since 1988. His most renowned work is Michael James Manaia.This one-person play, portraying a New Zealand Vietnam veteran, gained international acclaim, including a presentation at the Edinburgh Festival.This play, notable for its central Māori character, paved the way for other Māori playwrights, and two decades later, it received accolades during a tour across New Zealand and Australia in 2012. In recognition of his contribution to playwriting, Broughton was honored with the New Zealand Bruce Mason Playwriting Award in 1990.
